Girl in Trouble

Aubrey Owen gave up one baby for adoption and left another dead in a Dumpster. This year, she celebrates Mother's Day in prison with the third.

Sitting in the bathtub, Aubrey Owen cradled her newborn daughter in her arms. She held the baby until the water in the tub turned from hot to cold. She pinched her baby's feet, then checked for a heartbeat with her thumb. The baby wasn't crying or gurgling. Nothing.

Owen reached for a pair of scissors to cut the umbilical cord. Blood drained from Owen's end, but not a drop came from her baby.

A couple of hours earlier, Owen had been curled up on a love seat in the living room of her parents' home, watching a Chiefs game with her mom and dad. It was family tradition. On Sundays when she could break away, Owen drove home from Kansas State University to the cul-de-sac in Olathe.

But on this second weekend in October 2003, the trip was different. During the two-hour drive from Manhattan, Owen, then 20, had rehearsed how she might reveal the secret that she'd hidden under baggy clothes for nearly eight months.

Later, questioned by police, she would claim that she was humiliated and didn't know whom she could trust. A man had slipped something into her drink at a fraternity party, she would say; she'd awakened the next morning naked, with no memory of the night. A few weeks later, she learned she was pregnant.

Owen was excited about having a little girl, despite the circumstances of its conception. Her name would be Izabella.

But she still hadn't told her parents, fearing they would push her to give up the baby for adoption or, worse, get an abortion.

Owen's water broke while she was sitting on the love seat during the second quarter of the Chiefs game.

Panicked, she rushed out of the house, telling her parents she was going for a drive to do some thinking. Her parents didn't consider this odd — Owen was talking about applying to study abroad in Spain the following semester and was putting a lot of pressure on herself to excel in her classes.

Owen drove to Olathe Lake and parked near the bathrooms. She hadn't felt Izabella move for a week and a half, after Owen had fallen on a mound of sand at Tuttle Creek State Park in Manhattan. She thought there was a chance that landing on her abdomen had injured or killed her unborn daughter.

The contractions slowed after Owen spent about half an hour sitting alone at Olathe Lake. She went back to her parents' house, passing Olathe Medical Center on the way, and told her mom that she was going upstairs to take a shower.

The contractions started again in quick spasms. Owen realized she had to make a choice: call out for help, or fill the bathtub and deliver the baby alone.

She turned on the faucet and undressed. When the water was high enough, Owen lay down. As Izabella's head came out, Owen pushed, but she couldn't free her baby's shoulders. After struggling for at least 10 minutes, Owen finally pulled out Izabella.

"She was not alive," Owen would later tell the Pitch. "There was absolutely no response."

Owen cut the umbilical cord.

Fearing she might bleed to death, she wrapped her end of the cord with a hair tie. She flushed the blood clots down the toilet and took a shower to clean herself and wash away the blood still in the tub.

Then she wrapped Izabella in a green towel and rocked her in her arms for more than an hour. Owen eventually placed her baby, its umbilical cord and its placenta inside a backpack and left the house. Driving around in search of a place she could bury Izabella, Owen saw the Dumpster behind a strip mall at 2121 East 151st Street.

I love how this article has sugar coated the story and made Aubrey out to look like the victim. I also hung out with the so called "bad crowd" that Aubrey did but yet I was able to become a successful person with a beautiful little boy. During her 1st pregnancy she constantly did drugs and drank alcohol in hopes it would cause a miscarriage. She should have been criminally charged the 1st time she (almost) killed her baby. Then maybe she wouldnt have been able to successfully kill her 2nd child. She should of never been able the keep her 3rd child. I think the so called "rape" is a story to make it seem like what she did wasn't so bad. She abused drugs and alcohol the entire time I knew her and hung out with her. And she showed no remorse for what she did to that 1st baby. It makes me sick to my stomach that she is out of jail and raising a little girl. I pray for that child and hope no harm comes to her.

What a bunch of crap, I went to school with her from 7th grade up till she left college. Partied with her many times, knew many of her friends, bad and good. She's a sociopath, needs help and should not raise or deserve to raise a little child unless some serious changes occur mentally. Seriously, 2 times she intentionally and purposely compromised an unborn child's life in which resulted in a possible mental retardation (still up for debate) for and death for another and, in my opinion, is murder on both accounts morally and holistically. I wish her the best, I really do, but I fear for her kid's development and feel sorry for her family, especially her brother, who, even though a little limp-wristed, is a really cool dude and took a lot of unnecessary crap from people who did not even know the situation.

I wanted to shed a different light about Aubrey from the previous comments. I did not know her when all of this happened but right now she is a loving parent to her child has a steady job and works hard too keep positive people around her and her child. What she did was wrong and she did do her time for that. People can change into a model citizen which she has done. After reading about what happened I was glad to see what she had made herself into. I have a lot of respect for the way she is NOW and wish her the continued success!!!

This article brought to light many details about Aubreys case following her arrest in which many did not knowin 2009 people are still looking to know she received punishment for the death of her second child. Especially after disturbing the situation with her first baby was where no action was taken. I have to say that many of the details reported about Aubreys past are not fully correct. I have often said that Olathe is the smallest-large town in the nation because many of the community members and students know each other. I went to high school with Aubrey and ran with a similar crowd in college. I knew her before and knew about her after the birth of her first daughter (because that was enough for me) and she showed absolutely no signs of concern, compassion or remorse. The report of her only using cocaine a couple of times is actually amusing. I was very saddened to read that after we all knew she used during her first pregnancy, she would make the same detrimental decision during her second.
Her fathers comments about Aubreys drinking behavior to justify her rape allegations are truly disgusting. What father almost brags about his daughter party-girl ways? His job especially was to protect her and model good behavior. From that it is easy to see how her some of her problems could have stemmed from her youth. I do have to say though, there comes a time when a person (even as a teenager & young adult) has to stop blaming their childhood or child-parent relationships for their poor behaviors and actions and take some responsibility. Aubrey grew up with a decent family in a great part of town and was offered every opportunity we all weremany have it worse and still thrived. I honestly cannot believe a person such as Aubrey has another child and hope that the state (& our tax dollars) provided her the intense psychotherapy she needs during her stint prison. I am positive five years will not be enough & hope that Aubrey is FINALLY able to take responsibility. She needs to get herself treatment outside of the prison she should have had to call home for much longer than five years.

I just wanted to make sure you knew ALL the details of Aubrey. I was friends with her from 7th-12th grade. She was pregnate earlier in highschool, but prior to adoption she tried to kill the baby useing multipal drugs and alcohol. She was considering keeping the baby until the doctors told her she would probably have sever brain dammage, and probably would not live past the age of 4. This is when Aubrey decided to give her up for adoption. When the baby was born, she learned that she in fact was not mentally handicapped, she said she wished she would have kept it. Aubrey did a dispicable thing; speaking as a mother and on behalf of all mothers, I don't understand why she was allowed to have another child. Her tubes should be tied, and she should not be allowed to have ANY children. Not only that, but she only got 5 years for MURDER. I know people who were served more time for having a bag of marijuana. I am just sick with the whole thing.
