Gordon Biersch has no dress code and doesn’t encourage dancing on tables or bars. Instead of theme nights or DJs, this corporately owned brewery and restaurant simply features its house-made beer and a spacious outside seating area on the corner of the Power & Light District. Five-dollar beers, martinis and appetizers make this a popular happy hour choice for a mixed crowd after the downtown power suit crowd does lunch. Because the place closes earlier than its neighbors, Biersch is more about high-quality products and service than about being seen.

Restaurant Details

By local brewpub standards, this outpost of the Tennessee-based chain is downright glamorous. The setting is sleek, the servers are polished and well-trained and most of the dishes are made from scratch in the restaurant’s kitchen — many of the recipes incorporate house brews. It’s an extensive menu, too, with a wide range of traditional modern saloon fare (sandwiches, salads, steaks, pizza) and “international” choices: hummus, pot stickers, cashew chicken, chicken Marsala. Not everything is up to the fine standards of the beers and desserts (the incredible carrot cake feeds at least three), but many of the dishes actually live up to their descriptions, and the servers are kind enough to steer most diners in the right direction. — Charles Ferruzza
