Kevin Ryan has been running Governor Stumpys Grill House, a neighborhood favorite on Gregory, since 1997. Its clearly a family run operation, with portraits of the Ryan children on the walls and a 10 p.m. closing time on Fridays and Saturdays. Carrying on a proud tradition of hospitality, its popular for lunch or for a meal after kids soccer games -- and between 5 and 7 p.m., when the generally cheerful Brookside/Waldo happy hour patrons spill out onto the covered deck for smokes with their Michelob Ultras.
This cozy, friendly neighborhood restaurant serves generous portions of those fake ethnic delicacies (chili con queso, pizza, Asian stir-fry, fish and chips, chicken Parmigiano) that Midwesterners love so passionately as well as tavern-style favorites, including an aged filet mignon, a grilled patty melt smothered in sautéed onions, and a fried pork-tenderloin sandwich. Die-hard conservatives can order the Nixon Chicken Salad, the G.O.P. Burger or the Congressional Club. — Charles Ferruzza
