Greyboy

Saturday, August 13, at the Gaslight Tavern.

Taking London's acid-jazz scene and giving it a little Golden State flavor, Greyboy's 1993 debut, Freestylin', displayed a perfect equilibrium between produced beats and free-form instrumentation. More than a decade later, this San Diego DJ still smudges the line between hip-hop and jazz while throwing in everything but the kitchen sink. 2001's Mastered the Art, well, mastered the art of combining break beats with xylophones, Spanish guitars and even a little bossa nova, and last year's Soul Mosaic paid homage to funk and soul with Herbie Hancock-meets-Curtis Mayfield bravado. Never releasing the same record twice, Greyboy always keeps his listeners guessing, and the same can be said for his live sets, which have warmed up crowds for Ben Harper and Jack Johnson. With an unscripted agenda to keep bodies moving, there's no telling what will come off the wheels of steel on the Gaslight's patio Saturday.
