Heavy on the sass and camp, the Kansas City outpost of this lifestyle-friendly bar and diner is located in a hard-to-miss purple building on Southwest Boulevard. Though the aptly named burgers (“Black & Bleu Boy,” “Big Johnson”) are a huge draw, weekly events like drag-queen-hosted-charity-bingo and karaoke also attract a diverse crowd. The noise level is often high, so be prepared to lean in and shout, or just move the party up to the rooftop patio that overlooks the Crossroads. One of the most popular outdoor drinking decks in the city, it fills to capacity on First Fridays when the weather cooperates.

Restaurant Details

This burger joint is openly and ambitiously gay, although its staff – mostly waiters, all dimpled and as cherubic as altar boys – welcome every possible orientation. The burgers here aren’t exactly gourmet; Mary’s has more in common with a small-town malt shop or a diner than a big-city burger bistro. There are a few non-burger entrées and salads, but those items lean toward the nostalgic: patty melts, meatloaf platters and root-beer floats. The décor is as loud as the incessant disco beat in this perpetually cheery dining room. The ambience is probably more memorable than the food, especially when one of the staff dashes into the bar part of the restaurant to do an emotionally wrought karaoke number. You’ll feel like a queen, all right, whether you want to. — Charles Ferruzza
