April is almost gone, which means that National Poetry Month is almost behind us. Almost isn't now, however, and those of you still seeking meter, meaning and rhyme should head to the YWCA of Greater Kansas City (1017 North Sixth Street in Kansas City, Kansas, 913-371-1105) for "Speaking Out: Empowerment Through Spoken Word." April is also Sexual Abuse Awareness Month, so the YWCA is partnering with the Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA) to present this reading — an opportunity for poets and spoken-word artists to contemplate violence in the Kansas City community. Approximately 10 poets and performers, perhaps including some recorded reflections from Lansing inmates, take the stage at 7:30 p.m., following a reception at 7. The event is free and open to the public, but its subject matter means it's for mature audiences. Call 913-573-8645 for more information.
