Hear Her Roar

Jazz vocalist, pianist and bandleader Karrin Allyson flew her Kansas City coop about seven years ago for a more cosmopolitan roost in New York City, but her visits to the area are always welcome homecomings. Allyson has garnered three Grammy nominations over the course of her 16-year career: two for her Coltrane-inspired Ballads release in 2001 and one for her 2006 effort, Footprints. Allyson will appear at an event honoring women in jazz at 8 tonight at the Gem Theater (1615 East 18th Street). She'll join fellow vocal jazz lioness Mary Stallings and the 18th & Vine Big Band under the direction of saxophonist Bobby Watson for a two-hour affair celebrating jazz's feminine wiles. Call 816-474-6262 for tickets. Karrin Allyson
