Help Yourself

What good are words stripped of their context? The organizers of the Free Form Film Festival asked the same of film and found the answer in fringe media. The traveling showcase of film and music blends moving pictures with live musical and multimedia performances. Enter the fest's laissez-faire school of art — where anything is accepted and everything finds a place — with tonight's screening of Please Self Help Me at the Jackpot Music Hall (943 Massachusetts in Lawrence). Please Self Help Me breathes new life into vintage self-help and instructional footage with clever editing. Viewers are left with a funny, surreal window into the past. Accompanying the screening is St. Louis band Kanew, which will be performing with slides to achieve its self-described "tribal noise parody with a thick visual tilt." The all-ages event is from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged. For more information, call 785-832-1085 or see freeformfilm.org.
