Hog Heaven

North Kansas City’s Harley-Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations plant (11401 North Congress), which opened in 1998, has the distinction of being the only H-D facility to produce an entire motorcycle from start to finish. As the company’s Web site succinctly puts it, “People and process converge in Kansas City to transform raw materials into custom American muscle.” Hear that? Custom American muscle. It’s about damned time you saw what it takes to bring these legends to life.

The factory is open to the public anytime between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Call 877-883-1450 to schedule a one-hour tour. And hope the operators are busy — the hold music includes Foreigner’s “Hot Blooded.”
Mondays-Fridays, 8 a.m.-1 p.m., 2006
