Hot Lunch

Thursday nights at the Jackpot Saloon.

Born out of a KJHK 90.7 party not so long ago, Hot Lunch is quickly proving itself to be an alternative to the long-lived Neon, which coincidentally started in the same room, albeit one with a different name (La Tasca, baby). KJ jocks Jay Wells, Kyle Garrison and Phil Torpey helm the turntables and computers, purporting to bring it with soul from the '60s through the jams of today. (Don't turn your back, or that disturbing "Laffy Taffy" song, which ranks up there with Fergie's lumps, might sneak up on you. Ew.) Don't expect any proms come springtime, but do expect to find supporters of the local low-end-of-the-dial station and its staff, which, though known to be overly loquacious, graciously save the chat for the air.

Pitch Ultra Music

Festival DJ Competition

Hey, DJs, Monday is the deadline for submissions to the Pitch Ultra Music Festival DJ Competition. That means that over the next few days, we will apply our discerning ears to all the mix CDs that have been sent in to determine the five finalists for the Pitch Ultra Music Festival DJ Competition on February 24 at Jilly's. If we select you as a contender, you'll spin a 30-minute set before a bar full of dance-hungry club kids and sagacious judges, who will determine which of you we'll send to perform at the Ultra Music Festival at the Winter Music Conference in Miami on March 25. But we can't do any of that if you don't send us your best homespun mix CD. Bring or mail it to: Jason Harper, The Pitch, 1701 Main, Kansas City, MO 64108.
