But in the opposite-day world of hip-hop, where sick means fresh, "unnnghhh" is the sound of approval. So it's appropriate that a "that's so sick" groan is mixed into the production on "Am I Right or Am I Right?" the track featuring singer Reggie B that appears on rapper Info Gates' latest album, The Life of the Mind. I was puttering around the house, cleaning this or that, and absently listening to my free download of The Life of the Mind. Absently, that is, until Track 7. The opening bars of "Am I Right or Am I Right?" propelled me to my computer's speakers, where I plopped down, all ears. Info Gates (real name: Justin Gillespie) is the only KC rapper to win battles based on both freestyle MC and producer skills, taking the former title in 2009 and the latter this year. His collaborations with local acts keep him on his toes -- his production appeared on Steddy P's latest album, What Happened Tomorrow, most notably in the lead single, "Rock Steddy." He's also got upcoming projects with Ubi and Godimus of CES Cru (they've formed a group that they call Brain Locker) as well as the Soul Servers. But back to "Am I Right or Am I Right?" It's not that the rest of The Life of the Mind is bad. It's just that the smoove chorus on Track 7 will make you go unghhhh.
