Part of the south Plaza revitalization along Main Street, Jack Gage is named after a mid-twentieth-century British boxing promoter. The pugilistic paintings on the walls and cold, sterile decor might tempt you to call it an upscale sports bar, but the vibe is more like that of a casual steakhouse. An upwardly mobile clientele enjoys signature menu items like the wood-fried rotisserie chicken and Jack’s Punch (pineapple-infused vodka, shaken over ice, in a martini glass). But a younger, more parsimonious crowd comes for the happy hours -- 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 p.m to midnight, Sunday through Thursday (the reverse happy hour).

Restaurant Details

Young restaurateur Blair Hurst made a wise decision in hiring two of the city’s more talented pros – manager Joe Wilcox and chef Richard McPeake – to set the right mood for a casual, but tastefully appointed neighborhood pub that offers traditional Midwestern tavern fare (steaks, burgers, barbecued ribs, rotisserie chicken, salads) and Southern-influenced fare like fried chicken and waffles splashed in a bourbon-kissed maple glaze, spicy cheesy grits with sautéed shrimp, and Eggs Benedict or Eggs Sardou – served all day! The prices are reasonable and the service is uncommonly attentive. — Charles Ferruzza
