Jazz Beat: Megan Birdsall at Take Five Coffee + Bar

This one is all about standards and interpretations of pop and a spectacular voice. Other performers strive to push jazz forward or explore the jazz of other cultures. But when you hear Megan Birdsall's take on "Wichita Lineman" - or when she damn near swings the roof off a club on "Miss Otis Regrets" - you thrill at the life still to be discovered in the music we've known. With backup by T.J. Martley on piano, Danny Embrey on guitar, Bob Bowman on bass and Tim Cambron on drums, these classics give listeners a wallop. Birdsall doesn't perform as often as she once did, so the chance to see her at Take Five is a genuine jazz treat.
