The first Juneteenth happened back in 1865 on the 19th day of the month in Galveston, Texas, and commemorated the end of slavery. What was then known as African-American Emancipation Day has expanded over the years to encompass events that happen throughout June, all over the country, and which celebrate African-American history, achievement and progress. The
Third Annual Kansas City Memorial Juneteenth Jazz & Arts Festival takes place at Mill Creek Park (J.C. Nichols Parkway and 43rd Street). A concert featuring piano man and trumpeter Rev. Ronald V. Meyers Sr. begins at 6. The performance incorporates a slew of other musicians, including the Juneteenth Jazz Praise Ensemble, and is a tribute to jazz greats Jay McShann and Horace Peterson. Admission is free. An art show (opening at 1 p.m.) and a health summit (commencing at 2) take place at the Marriott Hotel at 4445 Main. See
