John & Jen

Squeezing lemonade from its little lemon, the Fishtank (1715 Wyandotte, 816-809-7110) excels at putting its small space to big dramatic effect. During the KC Fringe Festival, the claustrophobic setting provided an ideal scene for Thrill Me: The Leopold & Loeb Story, where sitting so close to the two leads implicated audience members in the characters' disturbing hothouse codependence. Fishtank again crams a lot of emotion into the tiny room with Andrew Lippa's John & Jen, another two-person chamber musical. Spanning four decades, John & Jen sees its female lead (Molly Denninghoff) go from sister to mother. The male lead (Price Messick) plays the roles of Jen's brother, John, and her son, also named John, in this portrait of family error and expectation, accompanied by piano and cello. Dip into the drama at 8 p.m. Additional performances: Saturday, Monday and October 7-10. See fishtanktheater.com.— Grace Suh
