There’s a pinball machine at Johnny’s Tavern on 119th. A gumball machine, too. But while the original Johnny’s started in Lawrence in the 1950s, this Overland Park outpost doesn’t look or feel like a '50s diner, and the games and gum aren’t there for atmosphere; they’re there for fun. Johnny's is a comfortable, homey, grab-a-drink-and-watch-a-game tavern, built on basic bar principles: affordable booze, friendly help, and a little entertainment to keep customers from getting bored. Throughout the week, half-price apps and discounted drinks draw in the post-work crowd. On the weekends, a pitcher-and-pizza deals makes for gut-busting fun.
