Lap me, I'm Irish.

Jolly Green Run

Lap me, I'm Irish.

SAT 3/13

There is perhaps no holiday more anathema to the long-distance run than St. Patrick's Day. That is, unless you consider that both the athletic event and the drinking holiday require special forms of endurance and that both can turn you unnatural shades of green. Or unless you think that being drunk might help you overcome a fear of finishing last. That's why we were relieved to discover that the 26th Annual Westport St. Patrick's Day 4-Mile Run and Walk takes place not on St. Patrick's Day proper but on the Saturday previous to the hoo-ha. The run begins at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Westport Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. Last-minute registration is available at Tizers on Friday from 12 to 7 p.m. or on Saturday morning starting at 8. Proceeds go to Redemptorist Social Services. For information, call 816-474-4652.-- Gina Kaufmann

Fish On

FRI 3/12

For some people, the greening of the trees, the lengthening sunlight and the warmer days are just precursors to dragging out the rod and reel and reconnecting with old friends at the bait shop. Like Santas in county trucks, workers from the Johnson County Parks and Recreation Department restock the lakes at Heritage Park (16050 Pflumm in Olathe) and Shawnee Mission Park (7900 Renner Road in Lenexa) this Friday with 3,000 pounds of rainbow trout. Heritage Park gets 1,000 pounds of fish at 2:30 p.m., and Shawnee Mission Park gets the rest at 3:45 p.m. Anglers can follow the truck like dirty hippies trailing Phish. The lakes will be closed until 5 a.m. Saturday, but hundreds of fish getting dumped into a lake gives nature lovers a rare sight and fishing enthusiasts a chance to study their prey. Call 913-888-4713 for more information.-- Christopher Sebela

Big Headed
The Comets keep on giving.

FRI 3/12

After eleven years as a Kansas City Comet, redheaded defender Wes Wade has played more games in a Comets uniform than anyone in franchise history. Wade has kicked a consistent amount of ass, hoisting himself up as the all-time franchise leader in scoring points, assists and blocks. So there's no question that he should be the proud subject of the KC Heritage Night bobblehead giveaway. The folks at Kemper Arena (1800 Genessee) will give away the shaky-headed dolls made in Wade's image to the first 3,000 fans when the Comets play the Milwaukee Wave at 7:35 p.m. Friday. For tickets, call 816-513-4000.-- Michael Vennard
