Like any good juke joint, the Kansas City Blues & Jazz Juke House serves up good, cheap food and is located at a crossroads (18th Street and Highland) where blues bands play to packed houses on weekends. Unlike classic juke joints, this operation charges high covers, has expensive drinks and is squeaky-clean. The closest thing to a traditional bar in the 18th and Vine District, the Juke House fills up fast on weekends with an older, distinguished crowd. During the week, the outside patio is a good hideout spot, perfect for a happy-hour beer while watching the looky-loos drive down 18th Street.

This place was not that great. I was really excited to go after hearing about the great lunch specials on 107.3. First off, when my daughter and I first arrived we were unsure if we were suppose to seat ourselves because no one assisted us. When we did sit down to place an order, the waitress took our order. It took about 45 min for us to get our food, and let me not forget to mention we were the only one's there. After getting our food, the waitress never came back to check on us. My daughter had to get up to ask for napkins, she later had to get up to ask for a refill, and I even had to get up to ask for a check. Very nice establishment, horrible horrible service.....

Worst experience ever. We came from Tennessee to visit the KC area. Initially when we came inside the Juke joint it was a very pleasant atmosphere. There was a gentleman seated at the bar who jumped up and asked if we were there for the buffet, we replied yes and he told the young lady behind the bar. We were not told where to sit or where the buffet was located (it was not visiable). Our party arrived a short time after and they paid not only for themselves but two others who were not far behind, which she had told the bartender/cashier. Upon the third parties arrival we had told the that their meal was paid for and directed them to the buffet. She was greeted by someone who asked if she had paid and she replied that her sister had paid for her meal. When she returned to the table she ordered water but did not receive it until after I approached a waitress and requested water. While trying to enjoy this fourteen dollar meal the waitress came over and placed three receipts on our table. Two for the buffet and one for drinks we had ordered. Baffled we questioned the waitress and she said it was for the meals. After telling her that the meals were paid for she approached the bar where we were seated close by, the manager and bartender/cashier was clearly discussing rather the two of the meals were paid for or not. My sister and I approached the bar after which the bartender/cashier confirmed that the meals were paid for. My sister explained to the manager how embarrassing it was for my other sister but for the entire table. The manager was not comforting at all when explaining the poor communication that she had with her staff. Although we were very calm the manager became very defensive in her explanation. During our entire conversation she not once apologize. When we sat back down she sent the bartender/cashier over to apologize, who by the way was very pleasant and sincere. When we returned to the table my sister who was offended had went to the bathroom and was very upset. It was only after we were in the bathroom trying to comfort our sister and some other patrons came inand went back out discussing my siste being upset that the manager came in to apologize. Normally we would just leave an establishment that has poor service but it was not the service but a poor decision on the manager to direct the server to place a ticket on our table instead of coming to the table so that we could confirm the payment of the meal. When traveling to Kc we love to dine out and you can rest assure that the Juke Joint will NOT be a place that I will go to nor reccommend.
