Celebrating what's known as Kustom Kulture, the hot-rod-crazy, rockabilly-loving
Gear Grinder event, is already huge after just two previous annual parties. "This is a much bigger group of people than most people realize," Cilla Holopter says of the GG demographic. "We're reminiscent of days gone by from the 1950s — much simpler times." Today's luau-themed installment kicks off at noon with a hot-rod and classic-car cruise (revving at Blue Star Motorcycle Co., 5508 Troost, 816-216-7673), followed by a car show and party at 4 p.m. at Knuckleheads Saloon (2715 Rochester, 816-483-1456), where Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys and the Rumblejetts perform.
