Downtown North Kansas City isnt very big, but it does have saloons, honky-tonks, a music venue, a sports bar and a European bakery. Former professional ball player Jeff Kelsos namesake lounge and restaurant is, by far, the swankiest joint in this neighborhood, thanks to its dimly lit interior, good-looking waitstaff and bartenders who know how to shake a superior martini. The kitchen fare isnt nearly as sophisticated as the cocktail menu, but its more than satisfying, particularly the gourmet pizza selection (served on retro aluminum plates) and pasta dishes. On Friday nights the place is packed with noisy revelers, but during the week, its a nice gathering place for friends and families. — Charles Ferruzza
