At Kelso’s, the first thing you notice is the smell of fresh pizza. This makes sense, as Kelso’s is one of the most popular pizza joints north of the river. But Kelso’s isn’t a pizza shop of the mom-and-pop, checkered-tablecloth variety. It’s modern and stylish, with clean, exposed brick and a curved, black granite-topped bar. Martinis and cosmos are as commonplace as Bud draws, and the well-stocked bar offers several top-shelf liquors. Lots of flat-screens offer visual distraction, as does the baseball memorabilia on the walls – a tribute to owner Jeff Kelso, a former pro ball player.

Restaurant Details

Downtown North Kansas City isn’t very big, but it does have saloons, honky-tonks, a music venue, a sports bar and a European bakery. Former professional ball player Jeff Kelso’s namesake lounge and restaurant is, by far, the swankiest joint in this neighborhood, thanks to its dimly lit interior, good-looking waitstaff and bartenders who know how to shake a superior martini. The kitchen fare isn’t nearly as sophisticated as the cocktail menu, but it’s more than satisfying, particularly the gourmet pizza selection (served on retro aluminum plates) and pasta dishes. On Friday nights the place is packed with noisy revelers, but during the week, it’s a nice gathering place for friends and families. — Charles Ferruzza
