Lawrence Schools Foundation Benefit

Thursday, May 8, at Liberty Hall.

This charity-concert collision of seemingly disparate Lawrence acts -- Get Up Kids, Approach and DJ Not a DJ -- isn't as strange as it might seem. The Kids are the area's best-known rock act, capable of winging over to Japan or Canada whenever they feel like playing out-of-town shows. But the lauded quintet is in good company with hip-hop everyman Approach, whose sets now feature a jazzy backing group with a penchant for knee-deep funk and old-school soul. This strategy gives Approach an edge over many of his rap peers, whose live accompaniment often consists of a CD player or a DAT machine. Speaking of which, DJ Not a DJ is a true rarity in the world of digital samplers and rack-mounted effects -- a live electronica band that plays real instruments.
