Lions and Tigers

This year's lunar Chinese New Year — the Year of the Tiger, according to Chinese astrology — falls on Valentine's Day, though that's not the day the Kansas City Chinese Association is celebrating the holiday. The KCCA has chosen to welcome the new year a week early. Tonight at 7, the organization ushers in the Tiger on a rousing note, with a show of traditional music and dancing — including the Lion Dance — plus martial-arts exhibitions and juggling, in the Carlsen Center's Yardley Hall at Johnson County Community College (12345 College Boulevard, Overland Park). A VIP reception at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, on the campus, precedes the event. Ticket prices for the celebration start at $10; for more information, see kcca-ks.org.
