Local Showoffs

Tonight, the curtain rises on Six Short Plays, featuring some of the best local theater talent KC has to offer. A mouthful to explain, the annual Actors’ Equity Association Membership Project Code presentation is an opportunity for local actors, directors, playwrights and theater folks in general to showcase themselves for producers and agents. “It opens doors for people,” Ernest Le Roy says. He’s directing The Mozart Project, one of four plays written by locals. The story, by Catherine Browder, is about a music critic’s journey to understanding Mozart. Other pieces come from Frank Higgins, Ron Simonian and actress-turned-writer Cynthia Hyer English. Seating for the productions is limited, but the public is welcome for what could be the only local staging for some of these shows. Six Short Plays’ run starts tonight and continues on weekends thorugh August 19. All performances are at 7:30 p.m. in Studio 116 at the UMKC Performing Arts Center (4949 Cherry). Call 816-756-0308 for more information.
