Long Live Opera

In its 50th year of mounting operas in KC, the Lyric Opera brings a true classic, Georges Bizet's Les pecheurs de perles, or The Pearl Fishers, to the Lyric Theater (1029 Central). In a run that begins tonight, the three-act production is performed in French with English subtitles projected above the stage. That might help you figure out what "Au fond du temple saint" — a beloved opera duet — is all about. And so might a free opera preview in the theater one hour before showtime. The Pearl Fishers, which shares a composer with the well-known Carmen, premiered in Paris more than 150 years ago. Following the tradition of the grand opera style, the story includes a love triangle, an exotic location and fire. Tickets cost $17 to $75. The curtain rises tonight at 8, with additional performances on November 5, 7, 9 and 11. Call 816-471-7344 for more information. Lyric Opera
