Love on the Decks

It's been a little more than nine years since Zach Lovely opened his shop, Lovely Skateboards, on 18th Street. In 2006, he began another operation in the West Bottoms — Union Press Screen Printing — and started to produce clothing, skate decks and other street-style items, keeping the Lovely name alive through trunk shows, loft parties and art openings. The Lovely Skateboards storefront is long gone, but Lovely and the rest of his production crew can be found at their new space, Steel Gallery & Studio (1219 Union, 816-842-5683). At the inaugural show, Weapons of Mass Production II, "The Art of Skateboarding" (a follow-up to a 2007 show), see the works of 40 artists on skateboard decks, plus live skateboarding on a mini ramp. In the future, Lovely says, "Expect to see shows that break the norm, and be introduced to new talent. Something fresh, with an edge to it." Tonight's opening reception is from 5 to 9, and the exhibit runs through June 10. For more information, call 816-842-5683.
