What is the best Tegan and Sara song to make out to, and why?
"Oh, God, that's our nightmare, when people make out to our music and tell us about it. One time a couple came up to us and told us the first time they had sex was to our record. It seriously took a good month for me to try and get that image out of my head. It wasn't like two hot people, either. It was not the kind of couple I wanted to picture having sex. I say we're the type of record you put on after you make out."
Have you seen anyone in the audience making out during a show?
"Yeah. Usually, I can't see them, 'cause they stand in the back. But one time -- this is a terrible story -- there were these two girls making out in the front row. I was distracted a bit, because I was like, whoa, that's a lot of public display of affection. And then after the show they came up, and they were twins. They looked identical, and they said, 'We're sisters, and we make out because people think it's funny.' I was like, 'That's not funny at all. Get away from me right now.'"
Have you ever worn black on Valentine's Day as a protest against the red and pink overload?
"You know, I really haven't. I've never really bought into the whole Valentine's Day thing. Not that I didn't celebrate or anything, but I had enough terrible boyfriends in junior high and high school -- like, one time someone gave me a rose and a $5 bill. [But] I've never really boycotted [the holiday]. And now I've been in a relationship for four and a half years, and our anniversary is actually February 14. It was totally by accident. I swear. It happened on that date that we finally started dating. Now I just think of it as my day, not Valentine's Day."
Do you have any other horror stories from Valentine's Day?
"In high school, I dated this guy -- we dated for, like, two years. And we broke up after graduation, but we still spent Valentine's Day together because we were single. That first Valentine's Day, we went to White Spot [a Canadian restaurant chain] and got food poisoning -- but we didn't know that yet. Then we went to this movie with Freddie Prinze Jr. I can't remember which one it was, but it was just terrible. The audience was making fun of it, throwing things. Then we went back to the house. We were both depressed and had diarrhea."
