It was a bright idea for Jan Imber and Ira Auerbach to move their popular diner, Bell Street Mamas, out of its cramped former location and into the much bigger space formerly occupied by the historic Nichols Lunch. It took a lot of work to clean the old building up, but Mama Imber and Auerbach created a comfortable family-style restaurant serving elaborate breakfasts including 66 different omelets and home-style lunches and dinners. Its comfort food: meatloaf, fried chicken, a variety of Italian entrees, burgers and Philly steak sandwiches. Busiest on weekend mornings, its one of the few restaurants in town that serves matzo ball soup, pizza burgers, pineapple pancakes and deep-fried cinnamon rolls and the waitresses call everyone hon.
