Mark Farina

Friday, September 10, at Kabal.

Welcome aboard Air Farina Flight 3000, service from San Francisco to Kansas City with a brief stop in Chicago. Our in-flight entertainment will be provided by Mark Farina, a man who refers to himself as a "modern-day traveling minstrel" and whose Web site is oddly devoted to re-creating an airport terminal. Naturally, Farina will be your captain this evening. The man developed his nuance for house music in Chi-Town alongside buddy Derrick Carter and produced the classic house track "Mood" as a member of the Symbols in Instruments before becoming a pioneer of the sound chronicled on his Mushroom Jazz series in Chicago, then San Francisco and beyond. The captain plays some 300 shows a year, blending his two signature styles -- the uptempo Chicago-SanFran house and the more mellow, groove-oriented mushroom jazz -- around the globe. Now, on behalf of Air Farina, I'd like to welcome you to Kansas City. Please be careful when opening the overhead bins; your expectations may have shifted during flight.
