Known for his work producing and engineering landmark recordings by Sonic Youth, Brian Eno, John Zorn, Unsane, the Dresden Dolls, and a slew of others (including Herbie Hancock during his "Rockit" period), Martin Bisi is only now beginning to concentrate on his own material. This rare appearance comes on the heels of his new album, Sirens of the Apocalypse, a playful sendup of female stereotypes that Bisi uses as a platform to explore his own romantic failures and, simultaneously, a wider range of social issues. Bisi has migrated to a more straight-ahead rock aesthetic over the course of his illustrious 27-year recording career, and Sirens even contains some lighthearted jabs at some of the musical movements he helped midwife in the studio. Still, as you might expect, Bisi's definition of "straight-ahead" still requires a fair amount of adventurousness on the part of the listener.
