Is it spoken word or bloody murder? I'm not sure. But take for granted that Mewithoutyou's kind of calculated screaming comes from a dark and complex place. As expressive as it is startling, the band has a sound that scares you into listening just a little bit longer. The group, which claims among its influences Jawbox and Burning Airlines, has itself been compared to Frodus and At the Drive In. Mewithoutyou is furious and hard but engaging enough to keep even the most timid listener curious. If the Dismemberment Plan went psychotic, it might sound something like this. Lead singer Aaron Weiss boasts a quivering shout that alternates between terrified screams and creepy whispers. A little scary? Yes, but in a really interesting way.
