College students and neighborhood folks alike are pleased with the latest reincarnation of Mike's Tavern at 54th Street and Troost. Reminiscent of the Gaf and Cantina del Rey, its sister establishments in Waldo, this double-sided bar and grill is decorated in rich colors and dark wood, and has a super-friendly vibe and pleasantly decorated restrooms. It attracts a sizable crowd of business-casual office types coming in for lunch, college kids blowing off steam after class, and regulars from the days when it was a dark bar that smelled like 46 years of stale beer. No longer a dive, Mike's brings people in with its reasonably priced food and liquor and its clean, calming interior.
