This California-based restaurant chain adds a French flavor to American diner fare and pulls it off — but not without unintentional hilarity. The Disneyland-style European cottage (complete with window boxes and brick patio) at the edge of Oak Park Mall has not only a breathtaking view of endless parking lots and 95th Street but also dining rooms decorated to the last inch with kitsch, posters and artwork that have more in common with duty-free shops than with the City of Lights. But if the ambience is phony, the food — oddly, its basically good, hearty American food — is the real thing. Everything from corn chowder and spinach-and-artichoke dip to pot roast and fettuccine tastes great, the portions are huge, and the prices are worth a can-can. — Charles Ferruzza
