Ming & FS live like green-conscious sci-fi superheroes. Yeah, their throbbing creations have scored them car commercials. But Ming, for one, not only pores over architectural designs for homes built out of renewable materials but also senses the needs of their inhabitants. Uh-huh. But these New York City DJs also epitomize musical progressiveness. Scouring inspirations scrapped by other DJs, the pair calls its drum-'n'-bass (which isn't as manic or linear as the typical UK style) "the junkyard sound." It's dense and challenging, laced with swing jazz and centered on hip-hop. Ming & FS are formally trained jazz musicians; veterans of rock, hardcore and hip-hop bands; producers and remix masters who create samples out of their own music exclusively. When not spinning on four centerstage turntables behind a guest MC, both play instruments live, which accounts for their growing jam-band cred.
