Ian Tobin, Broadway Café 4106 Broadway, 816-531-2432
We'll go ahead and say it: He's a pretty boy. But then, we have to ask: So what? The sight of Ian Tobin's trim yet defined forearm muscle flexing as he rhythmically tamps ground espresso beans behind the counter of Broadway Café is probably more exciting than it should be. He only encourages our excitement by swizzling heart designs into the thin crema on top of our delightfully rich beverages before serving us. An expert at the wry half-smile, he has won over many a lady regular. We know, we know -- the barista allure rests partly in the alterna-look, and this kid is as all-American as can be. He has blond hair and blue eyes, for crying out loud. But even though skateboarding isn't jocky and sporty like football or jogging, it's athletic enough to keep him looking buff. Is our fondness for Ian Tobin a betrayal of the hot-barista mystique? Should the most crushworthy local barista wear glasses and frown? Should he be waiflike and pale? Um, how to put this? No.
