Though its two stories look like back rooms at a community center, the Mutual Musicians Foundation offers one of the most authentic musical vibes around. Located in the historic 18th and Vine district, the Foundation is a true piece of living history, a place where local and national cats gather every Friday and Saturday night after the clubs close to jam into the wee hours of the morning -- just as they have since 1930. ( The place doesn't even open until midnight.) Don't be surprised if the stranger sitting next to you at one the tiny tables is suddenly the next person to grab a microphone and belt out a tune onstage. There's no smoking at the Foundation these days, making the outside stoop a popular spot for conversation and shared smokes.
