Wine lists often seem random, decided by the whims of a merlot-loving manager or an overstocked distributor’s sale. North’s wine list, however, befits its modern Italian menu. The wines are primarily, but not entirely, Italian in origin, with a wide range of “rosso” and “bianco.” Not a wine drinker? The house cocktail list is just as solid and includes the “Il Bacio” — a refreshing flute of vodka, soda, raspberries and rosemary. Daily happy hours treat your wallet well, and the large patio seems specially constructed for long, casual dinners.

Restaurant Details

Just remember this: North is south. It’s also one of the noisiest restaurants in the metro, so consider that if you’re planning a night of good food and stimulating conversation. The owners of this “cool, hip, casual” trattoria (Arizona-based Fox Restaurant Concepts) don’t want their sunny, raucous dining room to be anything like a traditional Italian restaurant – and it isn’t, although the menu includes thin-crust pizza, pasta and osso buco. The menu changes frequently, but most meals begin with a tiny dish of marinated olives and a basket of breads, served with an excellent neon-orange sun-dried-tomato butter. The secundo courses, such as grilled seafood, creamy risotto or a robust Bolognese pasta, are more than memorable, as are several pretty desserts including house-made fruit sorbetto. Chef Steven Maak insists that his sour-cherry bread pudding is the signature dolce here. — Charles Ferruzza
