The Spanish word tapas doesnt often show up on a Japanese restaurant menu, but One Bite isnt like any other restaurant. This tiny restaurant isnt a teppen-yaki steakhouse or a sushi joint. Its owner, Yokahama-born Erika Koike, has created her own version of an izakaya, which she likens to a Japanese tavern where patrons gather for drinks and a little bite of something. She quickly discovered that her customers preferred lots of bigger bites, too, so the menu ranges from starters to combo dinners that include salad and rice. The house specialties are tasty, particularly the pan-fried dumplings and the okonomi-yaki, a kind of fried flapjack made from a light batter, shredded cabbage and a variety of ingredients, topped with a malty Worcestershire-style sauce and a creamy mayonnaise concoction. And you havent lived until youve tasted a Cheese Bomb. — Charles Ferruzza

Excellent concept dining brings trendy style to bland suburbia. My blessing is that I live within walking distance.
Try my favorite: the seaweed salad. The constrast in texture and taste alone would put it around $15 under similar circumstances in New York or LA. Here it's the best value on the menu at $5.
A chat with the owner makes the experience. She's friendly, fast, and on-site at all times.
