One of the first upscale restaurants in downtown Independence, Opheliaâs is a snazzy venue with polished wood floors, comfortable banquettes, elegant light fixtures, and a shiny baby grand piano in one corner. The cuisine and service have improved dramatically over the past few years, particularly since imaginative chef Marshall Roth began to oversee the kitchen. Roth introduced such specialties as a starter of jumbo shrimp dipped in tempura batter and rolled in Rice Krispies as well as a delicately light cioppino made with superb hand-rolled noodles, shrimp, scallops, crab and grouper in a supple lemon-saffron broth. The Sunday brunch is an excellent surprise, too. — Charles Ferruzza
