Peaceful Vision

Tea, it seems, is a peaceful drink. Perhaps not in this country — here we throw it off ships to start wars and use it to protest the fascist evils of universal health care. But in other parts of the world, tea is a quiet, thoughtful drink, one that communities are built around. And the link between community and peace, both locally and globally, is the focus of Three Cups of Tea, the best-selling book by Greg Mortenson. Tonight at 7, the mountaineer turned humanitarian gives a presentation based on his new book, Stones Into Schools: Promoting Peace With Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It’s an account of his continued efforts to establish schools for girls in Afghanistan and of his vision for promoting peace through education and literacy. He speaks at Unity Temple on the Plaza (707 West 47th Street, 913-384-3126). Tickets cost $26.95 and include a guest pass and a hardcover copy of Stones Into Schools.
