Petal Pushing

Start the year off with a deposit in the good-karma bank. Rather than lazing away the first day of 2011, do something for the community. The inner city beautifiers with the Tulips on Troost project hold their final planting session of the season at 18th Street and Troost, starting at 10 a.m. Arrive in eco-friendly style on the Troost MAX. This is the first day of service for the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority's new rapid-transit line — which, come springtime, will roll past gorgeous red-tulip blooms. Not rain, snow or ice storm will pre-empt today's planting. After every tulip bulb gets a home in the dirt, the curbside gardeners can warm up over lunch at Grinders. For more information, e-mail info@ tulipsontroost or call 816-523-5553. — Crystal K. Wiebe
