You have to admire the tenacity of Louisiana-based Piccadilly Cafeterias. As one of the last big-name cafeterias in the metro, Piccadilly competes with all-you-can-eat buffets by operating much as it did in 1945, when the company was founded by T.H. Hamilton (who started his career working for Kansas City-based Forum Cafeterias). Baby boomers may still get a thrill from sliding a plastic tray down a track of metal tubing and loading it with artfully arranged salads, jiggling Jell-O cubes, fried chicken, chopped steak and gravy, liver and onions, and sweet-potato pie. To its credit, Piccadilly still prepares almost everything from scratch, and for budget-conscious diners and families with youngsters, the dinner specials are a dilly, all right. A full meal here can be cheaper than fast food and is probably better for you. — Charles Ferruzza
