Located in the meticulously restored Union Station, Pierpont’s is worth visiting just for its historic atmosphere. With beautifully marbled floors, vintage Mucha prints and 30-foot ceilings, this bar and restaurant possesses a turn-of-the-last-century elegance and style. Also appealing: the Fantastic Four Happy Hour, in the front lounge from 4 to 6 p.m. Four bucks gets you an array of appetizers, cocktails and wine, and happy hour is also the best time to watch sharply dressed bartenders navigate the stunning, 22-foot-high bar. Using an old-school library ladder, they climb to the top and zip back down again, bottle in hand, giving true meaning to the term top-shelf liquor.

Restaurant Details

The one real culinary success story at Union Station, Pierpont’s lives up to its namesake — millionaire J. Pierpont Morgan — in spirit and tastefulness. The dining rooms at Pierpont’s are striking, particularly the central room, with its soaring 25-foot ceilings, stone floors and intimate banquettes. Service is formal and attentive, and chef Brandon Crain’s cuisine melds regional ingredients (grilled steaks, rotisserie chicken) with French-influenced sauces — even a plain steak is drizzled with a potent jus lie flavored with truffle oil. On Sunday nights, the restaurant offers a “small plates” menu so adventurous diners can taste petite versions of several expensive dishes, along with salads and desserts. Every other night, this blue-chip restaurant makes a first-rate impression. — Charles Ferruzza
