This tiny restaurant and bar is fun – provided you can find somewhere to sit down. It has a sophisticated, mellow atmosphere reminiscent of neighborhood bars in big-city boroughs such as Brooklyn. With its lovely brick archway, the open kitchen adds to the cozy feel, and acoustic acts occasionally play on a small stage that doubles as table space. There’s no happy hour, but drink prices are reasonable. There’s also no stemware – wine is served in highball glasses. The men’s restroom has a unique feature – a chalkboard displaying a weekly “top 10” list, open to anyone with a good idea.

Restaurant Details

Owned by youthful chef John Williams and his girlfriend, Sarah Ponak, this intimate restaurant is as close to a beatnik boîte as you’ll find in Kansas City. Printed each night on a big green chalkboard, the limited menu lists five or six hot dishes and as many cold ones, including salads, pates, fresh fish and beef. Williams has a cosmopolitan sensibility, so even if the night’s offerings include his all-American namesake dish, the other choices are likely to be French in flavor. The desserts, made by John’s grandma, Grace Crispin, are strictly Midwestern: hot apple crisp or chocolate layer cake. — Charles Ferruzza

We really enjoyed it. The small dinning room ambiance and food were much better than most large Plaza restaurants.

We had seared scallops in a mushroom risotto w/ asparagus and a chicken pot pie.

The Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding was amazing! We will go back for this alone.

The only downsides were some of the food tended to be a tad too salty and there seemed little other choice to drink. We do not drink cocktails or wine. I had an iced tea but it didn't taste right.
