Primal Prints

Beasts and birds adorn the walls of the Bourgeois Pig (6 East Ninth Street in Lawrence) with Bird + Watchers, an installation of new art by printmakers Patrick Giroux and Rachel James. Relief prints lend an ancient feel to imagery that's decidedly contemporary — the red-and-green headless torso of "Birds on Tree Figure" or the wormy-mouthed cyclops of "Overindulgence." Winged and canine creatures dominate this collection of mostly red, black and green prints. Giroux and James utilize both relief prints and intaglio (wherein the image is etched or engraved rather than raised on the base plate — sort of the fancy opposite of relief printing). There are but 11 pieces, all of them small or medium, but there are enough woodsy, trippy details to keep you busy over coffee or drinks at one of Larryville's most storied establishments. The show runs through January 13. For more information, call the Pig at 785-843-1001. The Bourgeois Pig
