Q Rating

Love, longing and ... Internet porn? It's clear from the very start that the brazen Avenue Q is miles away from any musical Cole Porter or Jim Henson might have dreamed up. Humans and puppets share the stage in a postmodern production that pokes fun at musical standards, sardonically twisting them toward Crank Yankers territory. Set in a gritty New York City neighborhood, Avenue Q may look like Sesame Street, but its characters sound like they're from the wrong side of the tracks. But don't be misled by its dirty-mouthed façade: This winsome show won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Take a trip down the shady side of the street during a 7:30 p.m. production at the Lied Center of Kansas (1600 Stewart Drive in Lawrence). Tickets cost $42-$48 for adults and $21-$24 for KU students. Call 785-864-2787 or see lied.ku.edu/events/avenue-q.shtml.
