This barbecue joint dates back to 1964, but founder Earl Quick worked at the historic Rosedale Barbecue before he opened his namesake restaurant on Merriam Lane. Devotees love the fact that the place doesnt seem to have aged a bit. The dining room is like a tidy rec room with paneled walls, a shiny orange linoleum floor, neon beer signs and a jukebox. And the décor isnt the only retro component to Quicks. In addition to really superb smoked meats, ribs and burnt ends, the Quicks menu offers items not seen in most barbecue venues: fried chicken and catfish, a deep-fried hot dog, corn dogs and a fried bologna sandwich. Quicks still offers table service and the waitress brings out dinners on aluminum pie pans. The signature sauce is pretty spicy, but the cooks use a tamer version on the burnt ends. — Charles Ferruzza
