Chances are, there isn’t anyone left in Kansas City who remembers the West Bottoms when it was full of the hotels, bars and restaurants that accompanied the stockyards. A hundred years later, Genessee sees little nighttime action. But the experienced folks running the R Bar and Restaurant hope to change the neighborhood’s landscape with their alluring and sexy saloon, where contemporary flavors and local history swirl together in a long, narrow, brick-walled space. With classic cocktails and seasonal small-plate menus designed by mixologist Shawn Moriarty and executive chef Alex Pope, the R Bar and Restaurant is sophisticated enough and well-suited for foodies and nightlife connoisseurs alike.

Restaurant Details

This combination bar and upscale dining boîte has been brilliantly designed to look like the kind of honky-tonk saloon that might have really existed in this neighborhood back in the heyday of the stockyards. Owners Joy Jacobs and Lisa Morales have put a lot of time, money and thought into making the place a stylish place to drink and listen to live music – that includes hiring chef Alex Pope, formerly of the American, to give the menu a jolt of creativity that might surprise new patrons. A steak-and-burger joint this ain’t. Instead of bread, for example, Pope sends out a savory funnel cake drenched in a supple goat-cheese and paprika sauce. Other innovations: a foie-gras and caviar waffle or a “slaw” made with confit chicken, sage sausage, cannellini-bean purée and truffle crème fraiche. Yes, it’s more than a little affected, but it’s a refreshing culinary addition to the West Bottoms. — Charles Ferruzza
