Responsible Fuel

There's no shortage of biodiesel-curious motorists in Lawrence, but until four months ago, the nearest pump was in Topeka. The February opening of Zarco 66 Earth Friendly Fuels (900 Iowa, 785-832-0029) signaled a groundswell of interest in biodiesel and ethanol and offered an incentive for area residents to invest in flex-fuel vehicles. In addition to pumping soybean-tinted black gold, the station serves as a showcase for alternative energy technologies such as solar panels, wind turbines and living green roofs. "The biggest portion of everything we're doing right now is education," says Zarco 66 president Scott Zaremba. "It takes something dramatic to change people's habits and increase their comfort level." Get hip to all the new tricks today when the Green Energy Gateway Fuel Station hosts a belated grand-opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Scheduled speakers include Kansas Department of Agriculture Secretary Adrian Polansky and a state senator or two.
