People looking for an excuse to squeeze in one last summer road trip can pack a tent and head to the Lake of the Ozarks for the Soulful Union Music Fest. The festival offers an eclectic lineup of jam, blues, funk, bluegrass and hip-hop bands, all against the backdrop of Bagnell Dam. The Osage River runs through the campground at the base of the dam, so festivalgoers would be well advised to bring river-ready shoes. Aside from the pretty scenery, the event scores major points because people can bring their own beer. Take that, Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Bands scheduled to perform include Big Wu (right), the Willie Waldman Project, the Schwag, Madahoochi, Circadian, the Northern Pines Band and Kadence. Tickets cost $30 for weekendlong camping, parking and grooving, or $20 for just Saturday night. Kids ages ten and younger get in free. Gates open at noon on Friday. For directions, see www.soulfulunion.net.-- Sarah Smarsh.
Who says helping others has to be boring? Slip on a pair of spiked shoes, climb into a golf cart and ride eighteen holes alongside former Royals and Chiefs players, and the concept of helping others suddenly becomes a lot more fun. Monday's Rock & Jock Golf Tournament benefits the Kansas Special Olympics team, which just returned from Ireland flush with medals. Your $200 buys you a game of golf with former KC athletes, lunch with a soundtrack provided by 20/20, and an awards ceremony presided over by jolly weatherman Joe Lauria. Space is limited, so contact Howie Olsen at 913-236-9290, ext. 23, to reserve your spot and feel good about playing hooky.-- Christopher Sebela
Believe it or not, the football season is starting back up again (which, sadly, means summer is ending -- and we barely even got to complain about the heat this year). In these preseason times, everyone is getting anxious. People are wondering how their team will be, how their seats at Arrowhead will be, and perhaps even how mascot KC Wolf will be. Although the regular season doesn't begin until September 7, the Chiefs are playing the Minnesota Vikings in a preseason face-off Monday at 7:30 p.m., which the faithful can catch on KCTV Channel 5 if not at Arrowhead (I-70 and Blue Ridge Boulevard).
