Ropeadope New Music Seminar

Saturday, November 13, at The Granada.

Tom Shimura is a typical guy with typical frustrations. But the man better known as Lyrics Born refuses to let annoying telemarketers or his dwindling friendships and finances get the best of him on his acclaimed debut, Later That Day. The Tokyo-born Bay area MC injects a George Clinton-sized dose of funk into his speedy delivery of raspy rhetoric and block-party anthems as he raps about everyday problems and offers the comforting wisdom of a Jerry Springer final thought. Lyrics Born is one of the main attractions at the Ropeadope New Music Seminar, a four-hour smorgasbord of musicians, including Charlie Hunter, Sex Mob and DJ Rich Medina. But when Lyrics Born takes the stage, fans of hip-hop outfits such as Blackalicious and Outkast won't hesitate to nod their heads in reverence to one of today's most creative and versatile rhyme crafters.
